Have you ever read the right book at the right time?
It feels like an odd question to ask, but occasionally I will pick up a book that perfectly fits my mood and also comments on current events in a meaningful way. Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory was the book that made me feel this way over the past two days. It is a story of an interracial romance between Olivia, an attorney who moved from New York to L.A. to start her own firm, and Max, a junior senator who is passionate about the world he wants to help create.

Learning From Olivia
Romantic stories put us through a roller coaster of emotions, this we all know. We laugh, we cry, we scream, but sometimes--if we are very lucky--we also learn something valuable. Jasmine Guillory seamlessly wove valuable lessons into the uplifting story, and accomplished the following:

- showed her readers the pressures an interracial couple might face in the 21st century, especially a couple that is in the public eye
- described the obstacles a woman of colour faces in trying to establish her own business
- made clear the level of understanding there must be in a healthy, loving relationship
This was the first Jasmine Guillory novel I have read, and I was nervous when it arrived on my doorstep. Yes, a romantic story can often be cheesy, or formulaic, and although there were moments where I was giggling, I did not think her story was cheesy or formulaic at all. Olivia and Max's story was well paced, unique, and truly empowering for women (which was a lovely surprise). It was very hard to force myself to put the book down and go to sleep...
I am looking forward to reading this 4.5 star novel again, and exploring more of her work. I have a feeling that none of her novels will disappoint.
